Mail!

Paper mail, delivered by the mailman. An envelope, with a beautiful, funny Indonesian postcard inside. What I can understand from it this is an orginal image from 1930 (smoke Prijaji sigarets). I love spending time in paperstores, especially when I travel. In Indonesia there are so many nice graphics to be found. On the streets, in the supermarket. This postcard made me very happy (and not just for it's looks, it contained a touching message... how my little Moed Moet-boek inspired someone) Besides this postcard, there were two bills and a letter from the city council in my letterbox. And.....another postcard all the way from New York New York. O.M.G! I'm a lucky girl today.

Big big big smile!

Inspiratie

Inspiratie

Inspiration

October is 'Buy nothing new-month'. I seldom buy anything new and love secondhand stores. Im going around all the second hand stores around Amsterdam the first half of the month, cause im hoping it will be busy with new customers. Yesterday I found an amazing science book, and this magazine, called Maffia, printed in 1975 and the cars inspired me the most.

Inspiratie

Haar stijl spreekt me heel erg aan.

Inspiration

Second hand stores with all their hidden treasures are my biggest inspiration. Today i checked out the children-book section (hoping to find another Alain Grée-book, I know I would'nt. You can't be lucky all the time) and the human physiology-booksection. I found this old, smelly book with nice colourful drawings. Just what i was looking for!

Im not sure if you we really have Indian Summers in the Netherlands, cause I don't exactly know what the description of an Indian Summer is, but the weather sure is wonderful. Today I made a lovely ride with a kind, mischievous horse called King. And the weekend I spent with my rather large family in a big house in the woods. I played ping-pong with my cousins ('We rather play your sister, she is much better than you, but she's not available for ping-pong right now so yoiu will do.' Ok thanks guys...), and I gazed at the latest addition to our family, a two week old baby called Jonas Theo. The theme of our weekend was skiing/mountains. We ate raclette, the windows were covered in fake-snow and we even had a breathtaking mountain view from our windows. One of my aunts loves secondhand shopping as much as I do. Their whole house is filled with vintage design. All found in thriftstores or saved from dumpsters. It was my aunt who found this book: A childern book from Alain Grée. Beautiful, precise drawings with colors that resemble the colors in my own drawings. What an inspiration! Another Lost and Found treasure that made my day. My day? My whole weekend!

Monday-morning cheer-up! My friend Kathy Ziegler writes amazing songs, and has a beautiful voice.
This is a video of her in Prague!

I had forgotten how much I like Blogetheques Take it Away sessions. An oldie by Jason Mraz and a more recent one from Iron and Wine, and yeah that last band is coming the Netherlands soon! Now Im off in my wellies and raincoat, into the rain, to see some live music.

Plant III& IV

Beautiful yellow flowers from my courgette-plants. Instead of going to the supermarket if I need a courgette for my pasta I open the door to my balcony and cut the biggest courgette. Every day I see the plants grow, flowers blossom and I get regular visits from bees and other flying insects. Such a delight!
And I guess my weekend will be filled with making courgette-soup, carrot/courgette-muffins, grilled courgette etc. Cause they grow like crazy! Some good music from Trevor Moss and Hannah Lou while im in the kitchen grating the courgette.... have a good weekend!

Door

This is a picture of a house in Nicaragua, I think. Im not organized enough to put all my pics in books. Well sometimes I'm. From some trips all the pictures are nicely organized in big books, dates, places mentioned. I never take these books out to look at them. My plastic box on the other hand, full of random pictures, pieces of paper and letters is such an inspiration. Once in a while I take the box of my shelf and spent a whole evening looking at everything thats inside. Reading old letters and postcards. Lovely to read the words my loved ones once wrote me, and pics of mountains or waterfalls take me back to places I've been before.

Mail

If you are interested in receiving this envelop and postcard, please send me a mail. Im more than happy to send you one. (info[at]stadsgiraffe.nl) All we receive in the mailbox these days are bills and tax-letters. So brighten up some-ones mailbox with one of those. Or with another nice letter or postcard, if you like. And isn't it much nicer for the mail-man too to deliver happy mail instead of tax-letters?

Another traveling song

Traveling is great; everything is different. It opens up my ears, my eyes are wide open and I smell scents that are new to me. But I also left some things at home that are important for my work: my table, my coffee and more important my daily routine.
Finally today I felt I could draw again. While having a coffee i got my sketchbook out. (I dont like that very much, it's in intimite thing for me, drawing) I was very pleased with the drawing. And yes, daily routine can be a bit boring sometimes, but for my creative proces it is quite important. But so is traveling. I need the traveling for the inspiration but I also need a good table, and a quiet place to draw.
