Het Harde Potlood

For a couple of years I was a member (and one of the 4 founders) of artist-collective Het Harde Potlood.
We worked hard, laughed hard, talked loudly and made really nice work. This was one of our projects: murals in a school in the Hague. I quit the pencil because I had too much work on my hand, but Richtje Reinsma, Heleen Wiemer and Roosmarijn Schoonwelle are still working together as Het Harde Potlood, but also indiviually. Roosmarijn has a exhibition this weekend: www.C3deconceptstore.nl

New Address

I made a new addess-card for my friends, and all their belongings. Even the cat is in the picture.

Thrift store

More animal books. This one is about horses, and had a paper-cover with a picture of a pack of galloping horses. This paper cover fell off and this old-fashion cheesy book cover appeared.

Catpower singing Bob

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1Ic2-N8Vo0

What an amazing version of an amazing song. When I was 19 or 20 I went through a short phase of wanting to be a music-journalist. I tried to work for a local radiostation but was way too shy to talk to the musicians. Catpower was one of the artists I interviewed. She thought she was being interviewed by someone who was just 14 or so ( I looked quite young for my age). I thought she was a little weird (she was probably just drunk and jetlagged) But know if I listen to this song I can't that's the same woman I sat opposite from and tried to have a conversation with. What a fantastic version of this Bob song. But I'm also a big fan of her own work.

Late

Came home late last night,
could not resist a bit of drawing.

Fast Horse

City life is fast sometimes, efficient and organised. From times to times I have to get away a bit. But being back in my city is great too. Cycling fast on my bike from East of the City to the West, having a break in the middle for a wine with my friends. Dance a bit, and then cycle back, as fast as i can.

Ani singing Bob

I love 'Most of the Time' by Bob Dylan, I absolutely love the lyrics. Pretending you are fine when you're really not. We have all done that during periods of love sickness.
He sings so beautifully about it. This version, sung by Ani di Franco, is also great. Very touching and sensitive. And the lyrics kick in a little harder even.

And I love how she starts with the sentence: This is not a song I wrote this is a song Bob wrote.
(he doesnt need a last name!)

Hippo

Mountains are great.

I've spend some time in the mountains, and love everything about them. The views, the air, the cold, I even don't mind all those silly people walking around on skiboots. Skiing was great, drawing wasn't. Did not see a crayon for 5 days. But I'm back home, ( reunited with my deeply loved coffee-machine) and will get back into the drawing soon.

A seven-week old St Bernard puppy has a very knowing look on his face as he plays being an Alpine rescue dog... the only snag is that he keeps tripping over the barrel

Light-bulb

I wish the savinglights looked more better. They are not fun to draw at all. So an old lightbulb for now. Will it be nostalgia in a few years time?

Apples and Pears

London used to have this old streetlanguage, for the maffia to talk to eachothers without the police understanding them. They would rhyme on what they wanted the say: So under the stairs became= apples pears.
ANd they had a whole language like that. Really creative, and to me, also very charming.
Crookes rhyming a whole new language together.. they couldn't have been that bad...

Mule

i found this old picture in a 1972 magazine, its a picture by Winfield Parks, Like frames of a movie film, portaits of intrepid tourist hang clipped against a wall in Lindos.

Donkeys always remind me of Tom Waits, he sings a lot about Mules. I guess it is his favorite animal. (and a metaphore for his stubborn character I guess.) And I always picture him living in a farm somewhere down a deserted road in California. With two donkeys in a paddock next to his house.

Dog II

I've always been pretty bad at drawing faces. In art-school I just avoided them. I can do horses now, goose and birds I can draw. Human-faces are still difficult and so are dogs-faces. This works good too though.

Dog

Dogs

I bought this book about Dogs in the thriftstore, I has a great cover and the more than 139 colour and black and white photographs inspire me. And the texts next to the photo's are kind a funny in its own way. This one for instance: The fairy-like White Maltese.

But in most picture credits is trying to convince the reader NOT to buy this dog. It always comes down to the same thing: They might look cute but they need a lot of work. I guess he is right. I will stick to the book for now, and will not buy a cute looking Beagle today.
