Finally

They are here, the postcards I've been working on last week. It's always exciting and a bit scary to open the package that the printer sent.... are the colours alright? Did they turn out the way I imagined them? Well the colours are ok! The cards look pretty pretty. Soon for sale in my little Etsy-store

Mail!

Paper mail, delivered by the mailman. An envelope, with a beautiful, funny Indonesian postcard inside. What I can understand from it this is an orginal image from 1930 (smoke Prijaji sigarets). I love spending time in paperstores, especially when I travel. In Indonesia there are so many nice graphics to be found. On the streets, in the supermarket. This postcard made me very happy (and not just for it's looks, it contained a touching message... how my little Moed Moet-boek inspired someone) Besides this postcard, there were two bills and a letter from the city council in my letterbox. And.....another postcard all the way from New York New York. O.M.G! I'm a lucky girl today.

Heart

This is heart for E, one our riders at the equistrian riding school for the disabled. I started working there as a volunteer years ago. I walked around with a bucket of tar to take care of the hoofs, and I groomed the horses. Sometimes I helped out with the riders but, honestly, I wasn't very good in wiping drool away or shoving and pulling someones body so they are safe on the horse. But over the years I learned a lot and there were moments when I was deeply touched by the perseverance of some our riders. How they have to work to achieve the smallest things; holding on to the reign, or sitting up straight. One afternoon, I just stood there with tears in my eyes when one our childeren, (with a mental disability) pushed the wheelchair of another rider. Both of them screaming and laughing. And both them not bothered by their disability at all. Yesterday one of our riders wasn't feeling to well. He's around forty, and has Down Syndrom. He was quietly sitting in the corner of the bar. We all felt bad for him but we did not know what to do. I'm the bar-lady and I did not want him to be sick in my bar. For the selfish reason that I was oing to be the one to cleanup. Maybe some fresh air might help, I thought, and we went for a short walk. We walked up to Zuni, one of our horses. He looked at the horse, whispered to him and started patting the nose of the horse. Very calm and and very gentle. Completely focused. I was deeply touched by his calmness and kindness. A few moments earlier he annoyed me: Why did he not stay at home if he's ill. What if he vomits all over my floor? And i was a little scared. It is not always easy to reach out people who need our help. Especially if the situation makes us un-comfortable or even scares you. But I got over my fear and in return he just he just made my day. This heart is for him. And for myself as well, so I don't forget to be compassionate and kind to people who need help.

Little Red Ship trying to catch a Big Red Heart

I've opened an Etsy store two weeks ago, and slowly slowly Im adding products. Im hoping to sell all of my christmas-cards before the end of the year and in the meantime Im trying to photograph my work. It is not easy, I can tell you that. The light is never right, i pop up in the photo with my camera, as a reflection in the glass of the frame. And when it all seems alright I notice there is an electric wire on the wall that annoys me. My father used to be a photographer in the advertisement business. Well, i sure did not inherited his skills. But there is also positive news: I found a good printer that can make beautiful fine-art prints on heavy rag cotton paper. The colours will last forever. This drawing is going to be the next item for my little shop.

Suburb

Sometimes I clear out all my cupboards, and make two piles of the papers I find: the drawings I want to keep, and the drawings that have to go. I must say, I don't have any trouble throwing away my work. Especcialy if just isn't good enough. But these days I also have a digital cupboard and somehow my piles of old work are much bigger in the digital world. Old hard-drives, old folders, old sketches. There seems to be no end to it. Today i found this drawing. Don't even know I ever made it. I quite like it and upgraded it to my blog today. I named it 'Suburb' when I saved it. It could also be called 'Main character carries a heavy depression around in her handbag...' Marike.

Over haar co-schappen in Bolivia.

Big big big smile!

The first cards are on their way. Hope they will travel across the globe, and bring a smile to the faces of the people who's mailbox they end up in. Exciting!

Lost&Found
