To do list

I have a long to do list. But somehow I dont get a lot of things done these days. It's ok i guess. Today I fixed the lock on my bike. And found out that I did not have to fix my flat tyre. It was a flat tyre indeed, but no holes to be found. Just put some new air in and im cycling around again. Wish to-do list evaporate this easily all the time.

And my fun to do list of today and tomorrow is:
1. have dinner with two very close friends.
2. climb an indoor wall.
3. book a room in a hostel in New Zealand. Cause i will be travelling soon.

More Johnny Flynn

I should waist less time on the world wide web listening to music, I should draw more. But another good Johnny Flynn song with a great video. I do like all his artwork.

Illustratie

Inspiration

Slowly ive come to realize that are a few groundrules for making my drawings and art-work. I haven't worked out it completely but I have noticed a few important things. First drawing is just like any other thing you want to excell at: I need to draw a lot, practice, make mistakes, wor
k harder. Take it as seriously as any other job.

Another thing I have noticed that makes drawing easier for me is to buy a nice fresh sketchbook. I love to draw randomly on large pieces of paper. Draw everything I see or hear or feel. But after this stage a clean fresh sketchbook forces me to make choices. Pick out the good drawings, throw away the bad ones. And it forces me to think about rhythm of the selected works. Somehow a proper sketchbook makes my work more important. This goes for this blog as well: i have to make and pick out work on a regular basis. My work is such a big part of my life that I need these tools sometimes to make the good work as important as it is. Instead of having it on random pieces of paper, hidden in a drawer to be forgotten and thrown out eventually. So needless to say that im truly happy with all you visitors that come back to my blog. Take the time to look at my work. I think my drawings appreciate it as well. They like being looked at.

Animals Against Geert

This Polar Bear is not a fan of our right wing politician Geert Wilders. Wilders is opposed the islam, has very weird blond hair (fake = the man is half indonesian, I guess he does not want to make that too clear since he's quite racist). He is opposed art as well by the way. Or at least the art that 'left' people like. Don't want to trouble you too much with politics. Just hope this Polar Bear makes you laugh.

Digital Paranoia

Years ago when i moved houses i got an long piece of paper from the city-council. It said where I had lived, when I had left the country and all sorts of other things. These days my digital footprints are everywhere. The railway-company wants me to use a discountcard/chipknip-card that tells them exactly where I have been, when, and how often i make that trip. My supermarket wants me to use a discount-card so they know exactly what I buy. If i buy something on-line for my sister in Canada the online-store knows I have sister in Canada. A lot of people don't care and maybe Im a little digital paranoia. But it does freak me out sometimes. I saw a documentary about this subject that shows very well how much information is stored in places. I think its not the best documentary, 'Erasing David' But it does show how much information is kept in places and institutes that i don't even know about.
This documentary and an article in the newspaper inspired me to make this drawing. I will do it again, it's just the first draft. Decided to show it already though.

CD

Case Mayfield made an intense, honest EP. I made de drawings for the cd-booklet. Im really happy with the result, his music and lyrics and my drawings. It just works well together. The drawing you see here is for the song: Our Mom. Here you can listen to two songs. And this saturday there is a CD presentation in Pakhuis Wilhelmina. For more information about Case and the things he is up to.

Stamps

For years my friends send me letters from all over the world. This is my small collection. With stamps from Myanmar (Burma), Bhutan, India, New Zealand. The internet is amazing, but I do miss the slow words brought to me on paper. The stamps, the dates, the handwriting. Would you like to receive a letter from the Netherlands. Send me an e-mail and I will send you something. Marike

EP

I've mentioned the musician Case Mayfield before in this blog. I liked his music a lot, I told him this, he liked my drawings and now on the 30th of this month he will have a CD presetation of the EP he recorded. IM proud to announce I made the artwork of the CD sleeve (except for the cover)
Here you can read everything about the evening, cool bands, nice cd, warm outside and already a bit chilly outside on the streets of Amsterdam. So please come by for good tunes!

Get it!

What a nice candy-wrapper!
